Climate change and the Water Sector - Integrating Adaptation and Mitigation in Practice

17th November 2011 — 09:00 to 16:35

Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

Aim

The aim of this conference is to take stock of current thinking on climate change, the developing evidence base on emissions and risks, and in covering both adaptation and mitigation and their inter-relationships to look at how this thinking is being put into practice in response to the major drivers. The conference will demonstrate the methods and practice being developed and used in response to current policy drivers such as, Climate Change Act, Future Price Limits (Ofwat), EU Directives (e.g. Water Framework), and development of new Water Resource Management Plans.

Objectives

  • To provide an overview of the major programmes of work on climate change in relation to the water sector and how high level policy is directing work in the water, energy and carbon fields and the alignment of thinking across Government and including The Climate change Act and targets that are being set

  • Take stock of the current scientific and risk evidence in relation to climate change and its effects on water and the environment

  • To take an integrated view of the climate change, water and energy issues and explore mitigation and adaptation measures and how they interact

  • To look at a wide range of delivery and practice with case studies across the sector

  • To look forward and highlight what more needs to be done e.g. research, barrier removal etc, to help shape the policies and planning set out in the Water White Paper, Future Price Limits, Water Resource and WFD plans
