7 Environment Agency Vacancies

Last date for application: Sun 11 Mar 2012

The Environment Agency plays a major role in making decisions that protect and improve our estuarine, coastal and marine environment: we regulate activities and influence others to ensure the best possible decisions are made for the environment at the local and national level.

We currently have some exciting opportunities to support our work across the whole organisation:

Senior Marine Technical Specialist

We are looking for a senior specialist who can provide expert advice and support marine decision making in estuarine and coastal waters. You will influence high-profile decisions at a local and national level, such as changes to discharges into the marine environment, coastal development and the New Nuclear Build programme. You will present the evidence to influence key decision makers in the coastal zone, such as our Environment Managers and external organisations. You will need to have strong links with academia in order to access the best available science. This will enable us to apply our marine environmental standards effectively in our own decision making and when advising others, for example marine licensing by the MMO. Other responsibilities will include: promoting the harmonisation of data assessment, and interpreting and creating efficiencies through coordinated interagency working.

Marine Technical Specialists x 3 (one part time)

An exciting opportunity is available for 3 posts (one of which is part time) to provide assessments and advice for decision makers using best available data and information. One of the posts will lead the team of 5 staff. As part of a wider marine team you will influence high-profile decisions at a national and local level, such as changes to discharges into the marine environment, coastal development and the Nuclear New Build Programme. Data analysis and application of ecological, chemical, hydrological and morphological standards to environmental problems will be a key aspect of the roles. We are looking specifically for expertise in physical impacts on sea bed habitats, eutrophication science or chemical contaminants. Whilst a degree of specialisation is sought, specialists will be expected to contribute more widely to the work of the team for more general marine environmental assessment purposes.

Marine Modellers x 2

We are looking for two marine modellers who are able to use their mathematical modelling skills to run and develop new approaches to estuarine, coastal and marine modelling. They will be required to audit and assess modelling work done by other businesses or organisations, often as part of planning proposals. These roles will support the development and continual improvement of the models we use for environmental assessment in order for us to fulfil a range of European objectives such as the Water Framework Directive.

Senior Marine Monitoring Technical Advisor

We are looking for someone to lead the management and delivery of our marine monitoring programmes for estuarine and coastal waters. This is primarily for the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities, including the Water Framework, Bathing, Urban Waste and Shellfish Waters Directives. You will also help ensure we have staff with the right skills and training and systems are in place to ensure we produce high quality data that is fit for our environmental decision making. You will influence all aspects of our marine work providing a vital link between the development of national strategies and the use of monitoring data for decision making. You will understand current and evolving methods needed to monitor the coastal and marine environment, seeking innovative ways to improve efficiency.
