Opportunities for an Environmental Economist/Economist/Social Scientist

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is looking to appoint for three positions: Environmental Economist/Economist/Social Scientist. PML is recognised internationally as a dynamic, highly innovative, independent and impartial deliverer of scientific research and advice on the marine environment.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) has three posts available in the areas of Environmental Economics, Economics and/or Social Science. PML are looking to expand this area increasing our in-house expertise to complement and collaborate with natural scientists on leading-edge, globally important, internationally recognised environmental research. This research will address key issues related to the marine environment in areas such as: marine renewable energy, marine conservation zones, marine planning, climate change and ocean acidification and marine ecosystem service valuation.

PML is an international centre of excellence for marine science research. PML's research portfolio places particular emphasis on understanding the dynamics of marine ecosystems and human impacts on them through observation, empirical and modelling approaches. Since 2000 PML has been developing a complementary research area in marine environmental economics and already has research team undertaking innovative, interdisciplinary research funded by e.g. EU, NERC, UKERC and Defra. PML would like to further develop and expand this area by providing exciting opportunities for enthusiastic and highly motivated environmental economists, economists and/or social scientists.

For the senior researcher post, a minimum of 10 years’ experience as a researcher (or equivalent) in any area of environmental economics, economics or social science with a PhD (or equivalent qualification) will be required. You will be expected to lead, develop and carry out high quality marine environmental economics/social science research in PML and to win funding towards supporting the growth and development of this research area. The appointment is a permanent position.

For the researcher posts a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a researcher (or equivalent) in any area of environmental economics or other economic disciplines (e.g. resource, agricultural) with a PhD will be required. One appointment is a permanent position, the second appointment is a fixed-term maternity cover appointment for 1 year. Both positions will be expected to carry out and further develop high quality environmental economics research in PML.

Marine experience is not necessary, but for all posts experience in any the areas of marine renewable energy, marine resource economics, environmental valuation, or bioeconomic modelling would be advantageous. Applicants must be willing to work flexibly and travel nationally and internationally.
