Senior Specialist Coastal Strategy
Natural England is the government’s advisor on the natural environment and our purpose is to ensure that the natural environment in England is conserved, enhanced and managed for the benefit of present and future generations, thereby contributing to sustainable development.
Our coast is a very important part of our natural heritage, but our coastal environment faces pressures from development, flood and coastal defence, and other impacts. We have made significant strides in recent years, working with the Environment Agency and Defra, to help develop new solutions for coastal management which also conserve the important environmental features which makes our coastline so highly valued.
Our area team staff work closely with other organisations and local communities, providing advice on coastal plans and strategies which are so important for our environmental outcomes. Following the move of the current post holder to another role in Natural England, we need someone to lead this work from a national perspective. The key aspects of the role will be a national lead in our discussions with Defra, Environment Agency and other organisations, working closely with these bodies to ensure understanding of our objectives. The role will also provide national coordination of our work on local coastal plans, and develop new approaches to working with local communities which help them understand our national environmental objectives, and allow them to make informed choices. It will also lead work on evidence development and shape the advice we give nationally and locally. The post holder will work closely with our Principal Specialist for coastal conservation and other ecological specialists working at a national and local level.
We need an established expert on coastal nature conservation and, potentially, coastal landscape character. This expertise could be either from a technical or policy background. The post holder will need to be an excellent verbal and written communicator, have sufficient credibility to represent the organisation effectively in important national fora, and to provide credible leadership to experienced coastal conservation experts who work in our area teams.
