Environment Agency

Initial 6 month contract

About us

The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. Join us as a Marine Monitoring Officer and you’ll play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

The role

Conservation of our marine species and habitats is of vital importance. Our oceans support a huge abundance of life that needs to be protected for future generations. UK seas contain some of the finest examples of marine wildlife of both national and European importance that need to be protected for future generations. Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) are a new national site designation for England and Wales. They will enable us to protect some of the UK's most important marine species and habitats.

Based within our Marine Monitoring Service in Peterborough, you’ll help to plan, organise and complete boat-based surveys of the proposed MCZs, as well as produce survey reports and track sample analysis. Using a variety of survey techniques, including Day grab, Hamon grab, drop and towed video capture, and multibeam bathymetry and back scatter, you’ll produce high quality data to contribute to evidence to DEFRA for the designation of MCZs around England.

You’ll spend extended periods on the Environment Agency’s Coastal Survey Vessels and will travel throughout the UK. When you’re in the office, you’ll be based at Peterborough. Initially, this role is a six month contract but there is potential for it to be extended to a year.

About you

Firstly, you share our passion for the marine environment. Qualified to at least degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant marine subject, you should have field experience of biological sampling techniques and knowledge of sea bed sampling methods and sea bed habitat mapping. We’d also like you to be familiar with GIS software and data communications. Confident report writing skills are a must, as is an intelligent, logical approach to problem solving. You’ll also have a full driving licence and will need to undergo a ML5 or ENG 1 medical prior to taking up the role.

In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment.
