Environment Agency

6-12 month contract

About us

The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife; reduce the risk of flooding; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate. Join us as a Marine Monitoring Officer and you’ll play an important role in ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier world.

The role

Conservation of our marine species and habitats is of vital importance. Our oceans support a huge abundance of life that needs to be protected for future generations. Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) are a new national site designation for England and Wales. They will enable us to protect some of the UK's most important marine species and habitats.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a recent graduate to gain invaluable hands-on marine experience. Based within our Marine Monitoring Service in Peterborough, you’ll support our senior Marine Monitoring Officers, helping them to plan, organise and collect the entire statutory sampling programme. You’ll carry out marine sampling and then process the data and findings. While you’ll be based in our Peterborough office, you’ll spend at least four days a month out at sea. Initially, this role is a 6-12 month contract but there is potential for it to turn into a permanent position after that time.

About you

It’s likely that you’re a recent graduate with a marine-related degree (or equivalent qualification). You may even have some similar work experience behind you. It’s important that you have a good knowledge of coastal and estuarine scientific work and water quality instrumentation. We’d also like you to be familiar with data communications and safe working practices. We’ll give you full training for the role, as well as basic training to go to sea, including sea survival. You’ll have a full driving licence and will need to undergo a ML5 or ENG 1 medical prior to taking up the role.

In return, we offer a competitive package with a range of benefits and the opportunity to make a real difference to the environment.
