The Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) are responsible for managing aspects of the inshore waters off the Sussex coast; the district covers the entire Sussex Coast out to six nautical miles and all estuarine waters. The Sussex IFCA has a wide range of duties including the management of the exploitation of sea fisheries resources and the conservation of the marine environment, balancing socio-economic considerations with the need to protect the marine environment. The IFCA is funded by East Sussex County Council, West Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove City Council.
We are looking to appoint an experienced individual to support the introduction, development and management of Marine Protected Area within the Sussex IFCA district. This may also involve undertaking operational activities covering both enforcement and research requirements including the collection and recording of data of fishing activities by way of undertaking shore patrols, boarding other vessels and catch inspections. In addition you may undertake investigations into breaches of regulation, draft reports and attend court to give evidence as required.
The role requires public engagement activities and supporting external communications functions within the organisation.
The post involves extensive sea-going work, including within inshore waters off the Sussex coast in addition to onshore activities.
In accordance with Sussex IFCA Terms and Conditions of Service a 10% allowance on basic salary is paid for unsocial/additional hours. Officers involved in both enforcement and research activities are normally required to work a minimum of 20 weekend days per year and a maximum of 28 weekend days. Staff shall work on average a minimum of 37 hours per week.
